Clash of the Giants (YEP Regional workshops)

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts” – Winston Churchill

The 2018/2019 YEP program is now in its second phase. After conducting workshops in all the ten provinces of the country, a total of 65 participants were selected to proceed to the second phase of the program. The selected participants were given practical assignments to complete. These included formalization of their businesses. Regional workshops were conducted, with the country divided into two regions, southern and northern. Selected participants attended the regional workshops. The southern region workshop was held in Bulawayo attended by young entrepreneurs from Bulawayo, Mat. North, Mat. South and Midlands provinces. The northern region workshop was held in Harare with participants from Harare, Masvingo, Mash. Central, Mash. East, Mash. West and Manicaland provinces in attendance.

Midlands, Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South and Bulawayo shortlisted participants posing for a photo after the YEP Southern Region Workshop at ZITF in Bulawayo and the YEP Workshop Facilitator -Jonah Mungoshi (far left back row).

One of the most exciting events during the workshop was a new business pitching session called, “The Grill”. Every short-listed participant was given a chance to pitch his/her business in 2 minutes. In Bulawayo the participants had a rare opportunity to pitch their businesses live on Skyz FM radio – an excellent marketing opportunity for them. Every participant’s business pitch was assessed using the following criteria – originality of their businesses concept, market validation as well as knowledge of their business model.

The participants had to complete further exercises as part of the assessment. Twenty participants were chosen from the 65 to move into the third phase of program which entails the injection of seed capital into their businesses from the sponsor, CBZ Holdings. This helps to assess participants’ financial discipline in business.  Those who did not make it into the top 20 will continue to receive business advisory services from Empowered Life Trust.

The shortlisted participants’ enthusiasm made the workshop a truly unforgettable experience.

The Youth Entrepreneurs Program aims to empower youths, both males and females, around Zimbabwe through entrepreneurship training. The program is running for the third consecutive year since 2016. It was designed and is being implemented by Empowered Life Trust through sponsorship from CBZ Holdings. To date over 3,000 participants have taken part in the program since inception.
